While I did this in October, it is still an example of how one person can make a difference. I drove my packed Chevy Malibu 1400 miles - from CT to MS - to offer my help to the school system of Pass Christian. I spent 4 weeks there and, in addition to learning the facts about the utter devastation of Southern MS, I also learned a lot about myself and my ability to use oral and written communication to alert others to the great need that exists in this area. With another individual from FL, we have opened a distribution center in Delisle (Pass Christian) MS when the government, Red Cross and Salvation Army are leaving. Even though we were told that we were making a mistake and that "everyone has everything they need," Lee and I are committed to helping these people and to sharing the truth.
As a result, tractor trailers have begun to return with clothes, non-perishable food, blankets, and other supplies. I have realized, at the age of 54, that I can make a positive difference.
By having the courage and determination to do what I felt I needed to do, I have become even more determined to do my part to eliminate the gap between the "haves" and the "have nots."
