Michael: I will try to make this as short as I can. Back in 1959 I was a new bride of a wonderful man in the Navy in Norfolk, VA. I was brought up in Des Moines, IA, and my mother taught me to respect all elderly people, regardless of color, etc. I was on a bus going back home from shopping and an elderly lady who was black got on carrying two big bags of groceries. I was sitting mid way back on the bus. I got up and offered her my seat, as the bus was full and people were starting to stand for lack of seats. She tried to decline but I insisted. I didn't see her color, only that she was elderly and might fall when the bus started and stopped with her bags of groceries. The bus driver immediately slammed on the brakes and came back and said some really ugly things to us both and put us both off of the bus. The lady was in tears and was thanking me for trying to treat her as I did, I was just mad and very embarrassed. I have always remembered this incident and have prayed that the bus driver changed his thinking in later years. I was an Assistant Teacher in New Albany, MS before I moved here to Florida and I used to share this story with our children whenever we studied about Rosa Parks. I hope it touched their hearts as it has mine still after all these years. Keep up the good work Michael. God Bless You and Merry Christmas.....
