According to Richard Winger of Ballot Access News, California is the 4th hardest state in our Union to attain ballot status as an independent candidate.
Since April 23rd, my campaign has been working diligently to collect 10,198 signatures to get on the ballot in November against Nancy Pelosi. If one is a candidate that belongs to a party, he/she can pay a filing fee and collect 40 nomination signatures. As an independent, we had to collect 3% of the signatures of everyone who voted in the last general election; which was in November of 2006...where the Democrats were swept into control of the both Houses of Congress in a mandate for change and a new direction in Iraq.
It was very, very difficult, but today (9 days early), Cindy for Congress turned in 40% more than we needed for the remainder of signatures. Also, according to Richard Winger, I am only the 6th candidate in California history to attain ballot status as an independent. I focused on California history at UCLA, but I never thought I would be making it!
However, we are not on the ballot yet, the Department of Elections is validating our signatures and we should know by Friday if we made it. If not, we have from now until August 8th to collect more signatures, and we have a team of signature gatherers out on the streets already, just in case. Although, I think we will make it with this round of signatures.
I have not been so happy in a long time. I came to San Francisco about a year ago announcing my candidacy. I gave the last 10,000 I had in savings to open our office and begin our campaign (the campaign has been able to pay me back). I moved to San Francisco at the end of last year to establish a presence in the City, even though I have been a Bay Area resident for the last 15 years (I was born and raised in LA County).
The anger, if not outright disgust with Ms. Nancy ("If anyone can show me that George Bush committed a crime, I will impeach") Pelosi is growing as she has, in partnership with the Bush regime, subverted our Constitution and destroyed our rule of law and has condemned thousands more Iraqis and US soldiers to death by her funding of George's war OF terror.
After we turned in our signatures, I had to take an oath to "faithfully defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and DOMESTIC," but I have been fulfilling that oath every since my son (who also took that oath) died in Iraq on April 04, 2004. With your help, we will take Nancy's re-election "off the table," for abdicating her responsibility as a sworn officer of the Constitution.
It would have been much easier to do this as a member of a party, but we felt it was more important to do it unaffiliated with any party, no matter how good the party is, as in the Greens or Peace and Freedom, to prove that a truly independent person with a truly independent platform and ideology can be a voice for the people in our country that is so immersed and besot with the two party duopoly, today. We also want to prove that peace, accountability, democracy, economic equality and environmental responsibility are far more important than business as usual party politics.
Thanks for your support, encouragement and love!
The picture of me is in front of my office with our signature "gauge" that went over the top this past weekend!
Love & Peace,
Cindy
