LANSING, MI — A local priest hits the big screen in the new Michael Moore documentary "Capitalism, A Love Story." For the holy man, the appearance is more than just a film debut. As a man of God, he's used to tackling tough issues, but now Priest Peter Dougherty is taking on a new challenge, appearing in a major motion picture.
Peter Dougherty, Catholic Priest: "The film is about capitalism and we see so many people now reeling against all the corruption."
Filmmaker Michael Moore asked Dougherty to appear in the movie after they attended an event together earlier this year.
Peter Dougherty: "He wanted to approach it from the morality standpoint as well, and so he asked me as a Catholic priest what I had to say about capitalism."
The answer- a lot.
Peter Dougherty: "Things are in bad shape in the United States of America, our economy, the corruption is rampant."
And while some priests may have had reservations about appearing in a movie by a controversial director, Dougherty passionately accepted.
Peter Dougherty: "That's what I want my life to be about, how do I help stop having people be mangled and their lives ruined?"
So whether it's in front of the church pews or on the big screen, Dougherty says he just wants his message heard loud and clear.
Peter Dougherty: "Hopefully some of what I'm saying might strike a chord."
