Demonstrator Talks About Health Reform

WLNS TV 6

Dozens rally for reform they say our country can't live without. The mid-Michigan coalition for health care reform took to the streets of East Lansing to stand up for universal coverage. For one women who took part, it's an issue that tares at the heart. Sign in hand, determination on her face, Adrian Campbell Montgomery is ready for the fight of her life.

Adrian Campbell-Montgomery, health care reform advocate: "I want President Obama to see this and I want him to know that we're not going to take the current system anymore."

Because for Adrian, the current health care system has failed. 5 years ago doctors diagnosed the 27 year old with cervical cancer. She had surgery to remove the disease, fully expecting her insurance company to pick up the tab.

Adrian Campbell-Montgomery: "The type of surgery I had preformed is only recommended on women that are 26 years of age and older. Seeing how I was 22, they were denying payment, left me with a $8,000 bill."

It was a story so outrageous, Michael Moore showcased Adrian in his health care documentary, 'SiCKO.' Who would have known then that things would get even worse.

Adrian Campbell-Montgomery: "This year I got some more bad news. I was diagnosed with having ovarian cancer."

This time around, insurance didn't deny the claim, because Adrien no longer had coverage. She and her husband lost their jobs a few months back.

Adrian Campbell-Montgomery: "Right now I've got over $20,000 in medical debt, just from this year alone."

Leaving Adrian no choice but to file for bankruptcy when her treatments end in three months.

Adrian Campbell-Montgomery: "Nobody should have to go bankrupt because they get sick."

Which is why Adrian is urging every honk and waving every sign she can get fighting until reform becomes reality.
