Would We Like to Have a Trillion More Every Year and No Recession?

Is anyone listening? Republican fiscal conservatives? Democratic Blue Dogs? Taxpaying, flag waving, deficit hating, market loving friends from coast-to-coast?

"That means if we just scrapped our system and adopted any other wealthy country's system, at a minimum we would have a trillion dollars more a year for pay raises, for investment in new technology, to create new jobs or whatever." – President Bill Clinton speaking in 2011 to an international conference on healthcare.

What would our economy look like today if we had a trillion more every year for our citizens and healthcare too? Healthier? Wealthier? Wiser? OK, I like that well enough.

Now, would all the rest who do not want that for the United States please explain why? No pat answers about the corruption, please. Just straight talk about why killing the economy and killing people are good options as opposed to fixing the mess.

Otherwise, let’s join the nurses of National Nurses United/California Nurses Association in calling for those who created the damage to fix the damage and then let’s create the right kind of conditions to restore the nation’s economic health and go beyond that to vibrancy and decency and a better life for all Americans.

The contract is pretty straightforward, like nurses are. Nurses believe we all should have:

Jobs at living wages to reinvest in America.
Equal access to quality, public education.
Guaranteed healthcare with a single standard of care.
A secure retirement with the ability to retire in dignity.
Good housing, and protection from hunger.
A safe and healthy environment.
The right to collectively organize and bargain.
A just taxation system where corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share.

Restoring the promise — life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all.
