US Health Care System -- Needing the Same Beast that Broke Me

Medicare for all for life, single-payer, SiCKO, ACA, Obamacare, health care is a human right

On the verge of my surgery tomorrow, I am worried as much about surprise financial impacts as I am unexpected health issues. The hospital's pharmacy already called me and collected, in advance, my co-pay for the anti-clotting shots I will need when I go home. Now I half expect to see a business office person at my bedside making sure any non-covered costs are collected before it's lights out under the anesthesia. This health care system certainly is a mixed bag for me -- I wouldn't be alive today if not for some wonderful care I have received but I also wouldn't be without a home or have gone bankrupt. Sometimes, I do wonder...

Improved and expanded Medicare for all for life. That's what would have saved my financial life from the devastation we faced. I know I have had incredible experiences as the result of my engagement in Michael Moore's film, SiCKO, and the single-payer movement, and for those I am grateful. But I will also admit to not ever wanting any other person to have to hope they'll be plucked out of the masses to regain their dignity knowing how many others are left behind every day.

Signing off for tonight and until next week. Keep in mind that this week Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced "The American health Security Act of 2013," S 1782, and that Congressman Jim McDermott is preparing to introduce his state single-payer enabling legislation. Because I was blessed to work hard on these efforts when i was in D.C. as a part of national nurses united, it is gratifying to see those bills keep on keeping on. Someday, people on the verge of major medical treatment will not have to worry about money because we will get to single-payer -- and every bit of work done now is playing a role in making that happen for us.

Peace out.

December 12, 2013 -- Today's count of the health care dead and broke for profit in the U.S.:

The 2013, to date, U.S. medical-financial-
industrial -complex system dead: 42,955
The 2013, to date, U.S. health care system bankrupt: 679,500

** These figures are calculated based on the Harvard University studies on excess deaths in the U.S. due to lack of insurance coverage or the ability to pay for needed health care, and the Harvard University study that calculated the high percentage of personal bankruptcies attributable to medical crisis and debt in the U.S. 123 people die daily due to lack of coverage or cash to pay for care; 1,978 go bankrupt every day due to medical crisis and debt though the majority had insurance at the time their illness or injury occurred. This statistic is also based on the 1.2 million bankruptcies in the U.S. in 2012, according to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, and calculating those medically-related bankruptcies from that number.http://www.healthcareforallcolorado.org/endorse_right_to_health_care
