Nearly 50 area residents gathered last Friday at Babcock Park to peacefully observe the fifth anniversary of the start of the Iraq war and protest its continuance.
The group stood silently holding up protest signs and then gathered in a circle to share thoughts and sing songs together.
"The long line of those attending the vigil were well received by passing motorists," observed organizer Madge Strong of Willits CodePink. "This is now the second longest war in United States history exceeded only by Viet Nam. Over the Easter weekend, the official death toll of U.S. troops exceeded 4,000, but," as Strong noted, "this grossly understates the actual human and economic costs of the war.
"I want to thank those who have conducted this vigil every Friday at 5 p.m. since October 2001 and I encourage people to join in each week at Babcock Park to call for an end to this illegal, disastrous war," says Strong.
