PORTLAND (WCSH-6) -- Dozens of people gathered in Monument Square in Portland Tuesday to call for the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.
The rally was organized by the Maine Campaign to Impeach. The activists say they have 15,000 signatures from Mainers who want to see the President and Vice President impeached.
The group is hoping to put pressure on Representative Tom Allen to encourage the judiciary committee to open hearings on impeachment.
"We're not asking him to go in and grab Cheney by the scruff of the neck and haul him out of the White House, we are only asking the judiciary committee to investigate and research to draw up articles of impeachment, if they are appropriate," said Gary Higginbottom from Maine Campaign to Impeach.
Petition letters were taken to Representative Allen's office in Portland Tuesday afternoon.
The congressman says he has serious issues with the administration, but he adds that impeachment proceedings would distract congress and pull it away from other important legislative matters.
