Colorado State University's Board of Student Communications is meeting this morning to decide its next move against Rocky Mountain Collegian editor J. David McSwane.
McSwane led off last night's public BSC meeting, which drew more than 300 people, by defending the "F___ BUSH" editorial in Friday's Collegian that ignited debate about whether McSwane should remain editor of the five-day-a-week student newspaper.
If the BSC decides the complaints against McSwane have merit, it would convene a hearing panel, which would meet privately. McSwane would be allowed to add two members of the professional media to the panel as voting members. The panel would have at least four BSC members.
The BSC will decide whether the hearing will be formal or informal.
If the hearing is formal, the panel would meet privately to hear McSwane’s testimony, and to discuss the issues raised at Wednesday’s meeting.
The panel has four options for proceeding:
> dismiss the complaints;
> admonish McSwane;
> reprimand McSwane; or
> dismiss McSwane.
McSwane would have 20 days to appeal any decision made by the panel to the vice president of student affairs. Otherwise, the panel’s decision would be final unless the CSU Board of Governors chooses to intervene.
